ANNOUNCING THE NEIL INNES LEGACY PROJECT!

How You Can Help Keep Neil’s Work Alive With The Public.

In my recent note I mentioned that Neil’s focus was always on the next project rather than reliving the past. That made for wonderful creativity.  But a by-product of his humility and reticence to tout his earlier achievements meant that the appreciation of Neil is not as widespread as many of us feel he deserves. He had – and retains – a wonderful loyal following.  But it occurs to me that there is a mission for those of us who admire what Neil gave us.

Firstly I think it would be good to celebrate Neil in as many places and ways as possible that will resonate with existing admirers. Website, social media, in print and with new audio releases.

Secondly it would be really wonderful to help foster appreciation for Neil beyond his existing fans. Reaching people – especially younger folks – who have not yet had their brain dipped in the joy of Neil.  Let’s call those people the un-INNES-iated!

How can you help?

Simple.  We need people to assist us in a variety of tasks that will help us achieve our goals.

Listed below are six areas we’ve identified.

If you can lend a hand in one or more of these areas – please contact us.  And please share news of this legacy project with fellow fans, family and friends who might be willing to join this important endeavour.

1)  RESEARCH FOR WORDS

We want to assemble a comprehensive library featuring copies of published content about Neil for what will become our refreshed website and beyond.

Interviews, articles, reviews about Neil and his projects from every strata of his career 1965-2019. From newspapers, magazines, books, radio, TV and internet sources.

This requires forensic online research – plus looking in traditional libraries and searching through personal copies of print and broadcast content

We will provide notes and suggestions of how to send us what you gather – so we minimize duplication and everything fits into our uniform archiving format.

2)  RESEARCH FOR VISUAL IMAGES

We want to assemble a library of photographs, artworks, posters, adverts and handbills featuring Neil. There are many images on-line. And there are also images in other sources including original photographs, newspapers, magazines, books, recordings, and personal collections.

We will provide notes and suggestions of how to send us what you gather.

3)  RESEARCH FOR AUDIO & VIDEO CONTENT

We want to assemble a library of audio and video content featuring Neil. From radio shows, TV broadcasts, online presentations, fan-captured audio & video etc etc.

We will provide notes and suggestions of how to send us what you gather.

4)  RESEARCH FOR INFORMATION

We want to create a definitive chronology of Neil’s career 1965-2019. The When, the What and the Where.  Live performances, broadcasts, recording sessions, stage shows, festival appearances.  That will take considerable research.

5)  HELP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

By the time we launch our refreshed website and embark on a series of new audio releases we know we will need to have created and then maintain a significant presence in social media in celebration of Neil. We need foot soldiers who really know how to build in the worlds of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and other platforms.  We really need assistance. Are you game to help?

6)  HELP WITH DIGITAL TASKS

There are some technical tasks that we will need to undertake from time-to-time. That will probably be quite easy for those with digital skills. Examples: Scanning printed texts in conjunction with an OCR program to generate a digital transcription. Running audio (from audio or video sources) through a program that automatically transcribes and generates an (imperfect) text transcription. Harvesting video clips from tape, disc and online sources and archiving in digital format.

IF YOU’D LIKE TO HELP

Just let us know by email.  Indicate which of the six spheres you’d like to assist on.  And provide your contact info – eg email, phone, FaceTime or Skype details.
